Generators and MGs: Are You Doing Too Much or Too Little?
Recently, I shared some thoughts on Twitter about a pattern I’ve noticed in myself and other Generators/MGs:
Sometimes, Generators and MGs are drained and unsatisfied because we are doing *too much* and don't have enough time for what brings us joy and energizes us.
But sometimes we aren't satisfied at bedtime because we didn't engage in *enough* activities during the day. Often, adding in new energizing responsibilities and fun physical movement can lead to much more satisfaction, and we can still find time for everything.
This resonated with a lot of Generators and MGs! So, let’s go a little deeper…
Why does this happen?
Unlike other Human Design Types, the defined Sacral Center needs the right amount of activity each day (enough to use up your Sacral energy, which is where that satisfied feeling comes from) as well as the right kind of activities (the ones that you’re excited to do and that energize you).
We can end up unsatisfied when we do too many things that drain us, like working at a job we don’t find satisfying, saying yes to everything others ask of us, or never getting any rest.
And we can end up equally unsatisfied if we’re doing things we generally enjoy but not getting enough variety, resting/lounging too much, not spending enough time on our work or hobbies, or not finding enough outlets for our defined centers!
How do I know if this is happening to me?
The tell-tale sign of your energy being out of balance usually comes at bedtime. If you have a good mix of satisfying activity and rest that works for you (since everyone will be different), you’ll feel ready for the day to end, go to sleep, and wake up the next day.
When you’ve used up your Sacral energy, you’ll feel that global sense of satisfaction in your body that can be hard to put into words: you don’t have energy left for anything else; you feel settled, with a sense that you feel good about what you put your energy toward that day. Typically, it won’t be hard to crawl into bed and get some rest because you’re sleepy and tired! This might not happen every day because life has its ups and downs, but if you’re feeling this way most of the time, it’s a good opportunity to reevaluate!
If you haven’t quite found that blend of activities that works for you, at night, you might find yourself restless, engaging in bedtime revenge procrastination (a.k.a. staying up too late trying to get satisfaction out of something but instead ruining your energy for the next day), trying to numb your feelings with food and entertainment, or generally feeling existential anxiety. It’s like you need something more out of that day and you have too much energy (or you’re feeling too wired/overwhelmed) to rest.
Of course, our individual mental health situation can play into these things! However, using your energy properly also goes a long way in helping with mental health!
Simply put, we operate best when we are tired and ready to rest at the end of the day because we’ve used up our energy doing things that were satisfying, enjoyable, and energizing. We need to be tired to get solid rest that allows us to refill our Sacral tanks and gear up for the next day.
It’s not just Manifesting Generators who are multi-passionate
Manifesting Generators typically understand that they need multiple activities to remain satisfied. However, this is true of Generators, too! The difference is that Manifesting Generators tend to need that variety in their work lives in the form of multiple jobs, having a high degree of variance and novelty in what they do each day, and having room to expand to new areas throughout their careers.
For Generators, it’s more like they need to have a mix of work activities, hobbies/fun activities, and some physical activity each day. Generators may stick with the same work for years, decades, or their whole lives as they work toward mastery. But that doesn’t mean that one job is all we do.
As a 1/3 Generator, I’ve personally noticed a major difference in satisfaction when I can work as hard and as long as I want each day on Pure Generators and still squeeze in a trip to the gym (which I love) and at least 30 minutes of knitting (or one of my other creative hobbies) while I watch a TV show I enjoy.
In the first couple of years of creating Pure Generators, I didn’t consistently work out or devote time to creative activities only for pleasure (not money/work). I only focused on work, and not only did I accomplish less, but I felt a lot less satisfied at night and always stayed up way too late! It felt good to have total freedom and ample space in my work life after experiencing burnout in my previous job, but when it came down to it, I just simply wasn’t doing enough each day to achieve that “good-tired” feeling at bedtime. It wasn’t until I found that mix of different activities that I truly felt satisfied.
So, what do I about it?
Being aware of your satisfaction levels is the first step!
I created a daily/weekly exercise specifically for Generators and MGs to help you cultivate this awareness, which is a good place to start!
