Mark Zuckerberg vs Human Design: Why Energy Alignment Beats Wealth

Today on the treadmill at the gym, I was listening to the audiobook version of Careless People, the new exposé from former Facebook employee Sarah Wynn-Williams.

This book was riveting (it's insightful, thoughtful, and salacious), but there was one line that really stopped me in my tracks.

The author portrays Mark Zuckerberg as stubborn and controlling—a guy who wants everything and everyone to match his agenda.

He refuses to take meetings before noon (which, I mean—real), including with presidents of major world countries, engaging in bitter battles over a starting time that's 15 minutes earlier than what he prefers.

She says that his rationale for this is that he wants a life where "no one can tell him what to do, or when to do it, because that is true freedom and luxury" (I'm paraphrasing).

And it struck me because, even though Mark is a Projector and most of us here are Generators and MGs, he admits the universal truth that a lot of people don't realize—even when you're one of the richest, most powerful, or most famous people in the world, the ultimate goal is still to have control over how you use your energy.

And I was also like, "Holy shit. I have something major in my work life that Mark Zuckerberg does not."

Because I do have control over how I use my energy in my work and social life.

I know how to make decisions that are aligned for me, based on my Strategy and Authority.

I know what I need energetically to feel good because I know my Human Design.

One thing this book drives home is how often he is forced to do things he doesn't want to do, how many other people's agendas he gets roped into, and how concerned literal presidents of massive nations are with what he's doing.

I'm sure some of this feeds his Projector design that loves recognition.

But I'll bet the vast majority of it is actually out of alignment, becuase he's constantly being forced to do things that he does not excel at, like public speaking and socializing, which is not a good feeling for a Projector.

And this is a pattern I see in humanity—one which Human Design seeks to free us from.

We think that a certain path will guarantee success and satisfaction.

We think we have to do things a certain way because that's what we've been conditioned to believe.

A socially awkward guy like Mark Zuckerberg who seems to love spending his nights alone coding somehow ended up as the CEO of a trillion dollar company that is (ironically) about connecting people.

Is this what makes him feel the most successful? Maybe. But given what he told his staff about his desire for freedom and autonomy, I doubt it.

The gift of Human Design is that it helps us avoid these paths that aren't meant to be ours.

It helps us free our energy from things that we should do and put it toward things we want to do.

So, yeah...you might have something that the most rich and powerful people on this planet do not have—awareness of your energetic needs and the ability to make the right decisions for you by listening to your Strategy and Authority.

And if you're still working on it?

That's what I'm here to help with!
